since the holidays fell over a long weekend, i decided to take one extra day off and head up to byron bay, nsw for a relaxing weekend at the beach! i don't know what it is about byron bay however i must confess that from the minute we arrived, everything seemed to slow down... we headed down to the beach on christmas morning to find the beach littered with people in bikinis or board shorts, wearing santa hats!! there were even a couple of christmas trees decorated!! it was such a surprising sight for someone who's used to experiencing christmas in the cold!! we spent the evening at the beach, listening to a bunch of musicians playing and talking with everyone until the wee hours of the morning...
we had a morning of rain so we headed out to the lighthouse for a walk. the lighthouse itself is quite pretty however the more notable reason for walking to the lighthouse is so that you can stand on the most eastern point of australia!! it was a beautiful walk and the sun came out and provided some lovely clouds in the background for the photos!! the following day, i dragged nicole along to a surf lesson!! we made fools of ourselves on the beach learning how to stand up on the surfboards a million times before we were finally allowed in the water, only to make further fools of ourselves ;-) i did manage to catch four or fives waves while actually upright on the surfboard - there are photos to prove it but no one will ever see them as they were awful!! ;-) it was a fun sport and i think nicole and i might try it again soon in victoria!! we headed back to melbourne that afternoon and truly, i kinda needed another weekend to catch up on the lack of sleep from the one that'd just past!!
i've been busy with life in general as it's summer here which means that things are always a little hectic!! there have been movies, music in the park, an apron party (i'm now the proud owner of an apron that says "what's a nice girl like me doing in a place like this?! :-) and other miscellaneous events. in addition, i just had my dear friend patricia and her husband matt here. they spent a week in melbourne and we were out every night until quite late, eating, drinking and spotting penguins at the pier!! it was great to catch up with her and though i was sad as anything to see her go, i was also slightly happy to be able to go home on friday night, rent a movie and curl up in bed at 11pm...
from a work perspective, i have good news!! the boss has finally gotten around to making me permanent (i'm full-time now!!) and, i've switched states (i'm now covering queensland and new south wales) so i'll be traveling to sydney about once a month... it's taking me a bit to get used to the new places and projects in nsw but i'm sure i'll be doing okay by sometime in feb!!
must head off as there's so stuff i must get done before bedtime!!
hugs to all and i hope that the new year has been going really well for you all!!

i headed off on a trip to the land down under and somehow, like gilligan and the skipper, i've been marooned on this island for longer than planned!! ;-) i'm still discovering what is the world's sixth largest country as well as the surrounding environs! happy reading and keep in touch! ;-)

who needs a stairmaster?! ;-)
i'm a little behind in my blogging again however i have kept my promise to do something touristy for both november and december ;-)
in november, a group of 12 hiked to victoria's highest peak, a lovely gem called mt. bogong over a weekend. it wasn't a particularly long hike (only 13km) but it was an incessant uphill climb!! it was truly like being on the stairmaster for about 4 hours with little to no respite, just the constant burning of the calves and quads as we slowly ascented. the views were pretty nice from the top and then we crossed over the mountain range, dropping down into a small valley which was to be our home for the night!! it was freezing cold at 1986m above sea level, particularly with the wind and rain and hail but we snuggled into our tents/sleeping bags and listened to it beating down around 9pm!! it was still raining the next morning and beyond foggy to the point where we almost managed to miss the trail downwards. stairmaster in reverse for another 4hrs due to the slippery path and difficulty seeing and we were at the bottom. exhausted but proud of our efforts :-)
amazingly, i had little time to settle in after returning from india before the silly season started!! almost instantly, i seemed to be immersed in holiday parties or drinks interspersed with people wanting to catch up and hear how india went!! i managed to eat and drink my way through the month of december, gaining who knows how much weight... it was a lovely month filled with much hustle and bustle and truly, i needed the holidays to catch up on some sleep, etc...
hugs to all back home!!

p.s. i've kept 600 photos from india but have posted my 64 most favourite photos for your viewing pleasure at http://www.flickr.com/photos/decouvert2001/sets/72157623226264224/. happy viewing!! i decided that's more than enough for most folks to look at so i don't think i'll post any on shutterbug this time around...
