i headed off on a trip to the land down under and somehow, like gilligan and the skipper, i've been marooned on this island for longer than planned!! ;-) i'm still discovering what is the world's sixth largest country as well as the surrounding environs! happy reading and keep in touch! ;-)

time really does fly...how did it get to be november already?!
at the start of october, the gent and i spent a weekend in sydney. though i can't say we did a whole heck of a lot of from a touristy perspective, i had a fabulous time!! friday night saw us having a nice romantic dinner in darling harbour and a wander around the harbour. the weather was perfect for an evening stroll and it was delightful to have someone with which to share it!! saturday morning, we collected a hire car and headed up to the blue mountains for the day!! it was a rainy, grey, foggy day and truly, we arrived at one lookout and could barely see more than 2m in front of us!! we'll have to go back at some point in the future to actually see the mountains!! that said, we managed to eat our way around the little settlements, munching on handmade chocolates, fresh made sandwiches and soups, lollies and other delights!! we headed back to sydney, had dinner and then went out for a night on the town!! (he's a huge dancing fiend!!) sunday, we had a delicious brunch at a random cafe and then passed the day frivolously relaxing, taking pics and eating ice cream.... it's no wonder i gain weight while i'm on holidays!!
more recently, we headed off on a camping expedition (it's finally getting warm enough to camp!!) in gippsland with some friends. it was a long drive friday night with a treacherous descent into the valley where we camped for the weekend, next to a flowing river. blissful!! we arrived in a little car (a mini or something similar) and everyone else at the campground had these massive 4WD trucks!! i'd suggest they were the smarter campers ;-D we pitched my tent and snuggled in for the night. on saturday, we did a bit of hiking, had a picnic lunch and checked out the thomson dam (melbourne's largest and youngest water reservoir a mere 3hrs drive from the city!!) and then headed back to the campground for an afternoon snooze!! we spend the evening dining in front of a fire and toasting marshmallows!! absolutely perfect ;-D sunday, we had lunch in a nearby small town with a friend of mine and her partner and bunny hopped back to melbourne stopping in random spots and wineries. all up, a lovely weekend away ;-D
in addition to my little trips, i've been interstate for work which allowed me to see some more of small town new south wales. i've also been to my first grown up costume party (i dressed as bat girl and looked fabulous!!), attended my first aussie wedding, had a couple of birthday dinners, a housewarming and just some regular social stuff!! things have been super busy and will likely only get crazier as we approach the silly season!!
big hugs to everyone!

my worldly possessions are substantially reduced.....
i was only back for slightly over two weeks which really isn't enough time to properly visit under normal circumstances however i was also tasked with the job of giving away all of my worldly possessions as well!! it was an emotional visit with everything i'd accumulated my lifetime, being piled into dad and gail's garage so that i could sort through what should be kept, given away and to whom, and what i could take back or convince people to store on my behalf.... for anyone considering moving country, i strongly recommend you consider both the financial cost and the emotional effort in ridding yourself of all of your worldly possessions as they simply cannot all be taken with you... that said, i think a regular clean is good for the heath and keeps life uncluttered ;-)
other than getting rid of my stuff, i had a lovely time visiting with friends and family!! some highlights include a bbq at the pool at dad's with snow king crab legs on the bbq (thanks for going that extra mile to collect them anthony), aussie vintage wine with jocelyn; a lovely weekend in the muskokas which afforded me a chance to catch up with some girlfriends, practice my french and gorge on yummy food; an opportunity to see a great friend's new baby (and her and her hubby, of course ;-) to name just a few!! obviously there were many memorable lunches, dinners and drinks with friends and family!! the trip back was long and uneventful!! i don't know how people flew without movies previously as that's how i pass the time!!
since i've been back, i've been crazy busy catching up with friends and hibernating a bit in my cosy studio apt.... oddly, it missed me immensely ;-) i've been out to a photo exhibit, a wine tasting or two, a delicious degustation menu with 8 courses with my dinner club (the hungry muffins), a couple of birthdays and some a salsa lesson to name a few highlights!!
now that i'm back and settled (and the boss is also back from holidays), we'll have to sit down and finalise my application for permanent residency and get it submitted, as i wouldn't want to regret having given away all of my earthly possession!! i'll keep you posted on how that's progressing!!
hugs, kisses and thanks for the visits!!
sarah
p.s. for anyone interested, i've got my first real cold since i landed in australia!! i do hate being sick!! ah well, spring is right around the corner and it's been raining so much that they're lifting the water restrictions slightly!!

discovering some state parks...
my first and likely my most favourite state park was the mitchell river state park!! for those who know me, it'd be because there was actually flowing water in the river!! the camping was busy (it was the easter long weekend) but the hiking was magnificent and listening to the river flow was priceless ;-) (does mastercard still do that ad up in canada? ;-) i'd like to go back in spring as supposedly the river is actually good enough to whitewater kayak/raft (i'm not holding my breath!!)
the second weekend away was at the catherdral ranges state park, just under two hours from melbourne and very near where the bush fires were in 2009. there was a flowing creek at this campground, very few people and multiple hiking tracks. we opted for a couple of different hikes over the weekend! the first was along the creek where we found some fabulous red mushrooms similar to the ones the smurfs used to live in!! (not to worry, i didn't try to sample them!! :-) the second was heading through a section that wasn't open to the public due to damage from the fires - it was rugged and heaps of fun!! finally, we did a hike over one of the peaks which was a bit of hard work, especially in the hot sun, but it afforded beautiful views from the top!!
my final camping weekend was in the grampians for the queen's birthday long weekend. we stayed at a scout campground where we had a cabin with a wood fire, a commercial kitchen, hot showers and dormitories!! it was a bit more about the creature comforts which is good as the weather was cool to cold at night for the three days! i'd hoped to do some climbing but i just wasn't motivated to get my fingers stuck into cold rock so instead i hiked around for the three days!!
otherwise, i've been super busy with work and my regular life (movies, drinks, birthdays, etc...) that everyone's got going on except for the two exciting things.... my three year anniversary in australia and my birthday!! i can't believe how time has passed but obviously it has!!
for those unaware (and still reading), i'll be back in canada in a month's time for just over two weeks. it's a long way to come for such a short time but i'm leave poor as i'm hoping to hike the kokoda track in september/october.... we'll see if i have enough vacation left ;-)
big hugs to all!

the red centre.....
i've been meaning to get out to alice springs so that i can leapfrog myself to uluru (ayers rock), kata tjuta (the olgas) and kings canyon for over a year. that said, heading into the desert involves a bit of planning as the last thing i wanted to do was visit the above to spend copious amounts of time outdoors when it's 45+ degrees outside!! the ANZAC day long weekend afforded reasonable weather and reasonably priced return flights to melbourne so i booked and off i went!! :-)
i arrived in alice springs late morning and spend the afternoon at the pool, lapping up a half day of relaxation before my three day tour. i was picked up at 6am on friday morning and the four of us on the tour headed off towards uluru in a landcruiser. it's a 6hr drive so we arrived at our camping spot for the evening around lunch time and then headed over to 'the rock'.
uluru is 348m in height about approximately 9.1m in circumference. geologists believe that approximately one third of 'the rock' is actually above the earth's surface. they speculate that it continues between 500m and 2km further into the earth which is enormous considering it's one single rock!! according to aboriginal legend, uluru was formed by two aboriginal boys who, while waiting for their elders, found a puddle and made mud cakes. they waited so long that they were finally atop of a massive rock so they slid down the rock, creating grooves and markings by their butts and fingers!!
'the rock' was open for climbing (not too hot and no issues from an aboriginal perspective) however i refrained from climbing, opting instead to walk around the circumference and take photos. it was hot and somewhat unpleasant walk as there are heaps of flies and the sun was burning down upon me for 2.5hrs but i got some nice photos. the sun was starting to set so headed off to the viewing area to watch the sun set on 'the rock'. i was amazed at how drastically the colour changes as the sun sets.... it ranges from a yellow to terracotta to a bright red and then to a purple within minutes!! cameras needed to be at the ready (while also enjoying our champagne, biscuits and cheese :-)
we headed back to our campsite, cooked dinner over an open fire and then snuggled into our 'swags' for the night. (a swag is a personal canvas sleeping compartment. it was a mattress on the bottom and you put yourself, your pillow and your sleeping bag inside and snuggle up near the fire and look at the stars!! a fantastic new experience for me!! :-)
we were up at 5am the next morning, packed up and headed over to watch the sunrise on the kata tjuta and over uluru. we then hiked around the olgas, checking out the 36 small humps all collected together only kilometers from uluru. kata tjuta is taller than uluru however it doesn't have quite the same presence as uluru. that said, we had a fabulous hike through the valleys and crevices, saw some wild camel (there are between 500,000 and one million wild camels in australia). we headed into the landcruiser towards lunch, a quick dip in the pool and then off to our campsite for the night.
another dinner over an open fire, a night in a swag and then up at 5am (yes, these are my holidays!!) to drive over to kings canyon to watch the sunrise. the canyons were absolutely breathtaking (my favourite of the three main attractions) and we had a fabulous hike through with too many photo opportunities to even mention!! from there, we headed back towards alice springs, stopping to check out mt. connor (resembles uluru but it's actually a mountain, not a rock), a salt lake and some beautiful terracotta coloured sands en route. truly, the scenery during the entire three days was beyond words... it's just so completely different than anything that we're accustom to seeing!!
i had a lovely shower and headed out for dinner, a bit of drinking/dancing and then off to bed, exhausted from all of the early mornings!! i'm actually looking forward to going back to work so that i can sleep in!!
big hugs to all and i'll post some pictures next week for your viewing pleasure!!

p.s. ANZAC day is a memorial day for those that served during WWI and WWII (similar to november 11 in canada). in memory of their war heroes, a song was written called "waltzing mathilda" which made me misty eyed when you listen to the acoustic version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPFjToKuZQM

time passes so quickly...
well to start, my trip for february was to sydney (it was the first time in two years). i headed up for work and then spend a couple of extra days exploring... at least that was the intention however the weather had other plans as it rained for the entire 5 days!! it rained so much that things were floating randomly down the streets and i went through two umbrellas due to the wind!! about two weekends later, we had a similar downpour weekend in melbourne with massive hail stones and 500 million litres of water falling in the catchment over two days!! i don't believe i'd seen so much rain fall in melbourne in the 2.7yrs i've been here!! it was pretty amazing and definitely warranted water cooler conversations on monday that started with 'what size where the hail stones near you?' or 'did your roof leak over the weekend?'.... it was kind of funny to hear everyone sharing war stories :-)
for march, my trip happened this weekend gone when me and 11 friends headed down to philip island for a relaxing weekend away. we drove up friday night and had a relaxing evening drinking sangria, eating pizza and talking sh*t. saturday involved brunch on a patio followed by a wine tasting, a chocolate tasting and then a hike to walk off all of the food we'd inhaled ;-) we had a lovely bbq (the first time i've bbq'd since i got here) and then played some hilarious board games and danced late into the night (i realise that it's an odd combination of activities but it seemed sensible at the time ;-) brunch, a stroll along the beach and then it was time to start making our way back to melbourne on sunday. (it was a great weekend away however it was even better because it was grand prix weekend so i missed the screeching cars racing by about 200m from my house all weekend!! :-)
other than the above, i've been to a short film festival competition which was fabulous (no longer than 7mins in length), i caught up with a guy i met in india and had way too much wine one saturday afternoon. i had a couple of different bday drinks or bbqs, a couple of hikes (including a 20km day), a great micro brewery tasting event on st patty's day and some relaxing sunday afternoons in the park listening to live music with friends.
in addition, i've decided to volunteer for the victorian aids council. effectively, i'll be working with clients who are fairly isolated from their community, some with serious medical issues, going for coffee, planning group events, etc... i haven't started yet however it should commence soon after my extensive two days of training. i'm looking forward to the challenge!
must head off as it's time for bed. i'm flying up to sydney for the day in the morning... it'll be a long day!!
by the way, for those still reading, i promise that there's a fantastic trip planned for april (if not two since we have two long weekends in april). just a bit of a teaser to keep you coming back:-)
hugs and happy spring for those in north america!!

catching a wave...
we had a morning of rain so we headed out to the lighthouse for a walk. the lighthouse itself is quite pretty however the more notable reason for walking to the lighthouse is so that you can stand on the most eastern point of australia!! it was a beautiful walk and the sun came out and provided some lovely clouds in the background for the photos!! the following day, i dragged nicole along to a surf lesson!! we made fools of ourselves on the beach learning how to stand up on the surfboards a million times before we were finally allowed in the water, only to make further fools of ourselves ;-) i did manage to catch four or fives waves while actually upright on the surfboard - there are photos to prove it but no one will ever see them as they were awful!! ;-) it was a fun sport and i think nicole and i might try it again soon in victoria!! we headed back to melbourne that afternoon and truly, i kinda needed another weekend to catch up on the lack of sleep from the one that'd just past!!
i've been busy with life in general as it's summer here which means that things are always a little hectic!! there have been movies, music in the park, an apron party (i'm now the proud owner of an apron that says "what's a nice girl like me doing in a place like this?! :-) and other miscellaneous events. in addition, i just had my dear friend patricia and her husband matt here. they spent a week in melbourne and we were out every night until quite late, eating, drinking and spotting penguins at the pier!! it was great to catch up with her and though i was sad as anything to see her go, i was also slightly happy to be able to go home on friday night, rent a movie and curl up in bed at 11pm...
from a work perspective, i have good news!! the boss has finally gotten around to making me permanent (i'm full-time now!!) and, i've switched states (i'm now covering queensland and new south wales) so i'll be traveling to sydney about once a month... it's taking me a bit to get used to the new places and projects in nsw but i'm sure i'll be doing okay by sometime in feb!!
must head off as there's so stuff i must get done before bedtime!!
hugs to all and i hope that the new year has been going really well for you all!!

who needs a stairmaster?! ;-)
in november, a group of 12 hiked to victoria's highest peak, a lovely gem called mt. bogong over a weekend. it wasn't a particularly long hike (only 13km) but it was an incessant uphill climb!! it was truly like being on the stairmaster for about 4 hours with little to no respite, just the constant burning of the calves and quads as we slowly ascented. the views were pretty nice from the top and then we crossed over the mountain range, dropping down into a small valley which was to be our home for the night!! it was freezing cold at 1986m above sea level, particularly with the wind and rain and hail but we snuggled into our tents/sleeping bags and listened to it beating down around 9pm!! it was still raining the next morning and beyond foggy to the point where we almost managed to miss the trail downwards. stairmaster in reverse for another 4hrs due to the slippery path and difficulty seeing and we were at the bottom. exhausted but proud of our efforts :-)
amazingly, i had little time to settle in after returning from india before the silly season started!! almost instantly, i seemed to be immersed in holiday parties or drinks interspersed with people wanting to catch up and hear how india went!! i managed to eat and drink my way through the month of december, gaining who knows how much weight... it was a lovely month filled with much hustle and bustle and truly, i needed the holidays to catch up on some sleep, etc...
hugs to all back home!!

p.s. i've kept 600 photos from india but have posted my 64 most favourite photos for your viewing pleasure at http://www.flickr.com/photos/decouvert2001/sets/72157623226264224/. happy viewing!! i decided that's more than enough for most folks to look at so i don't think i'll post any on shutterbug this time around...
